Camel Cigarettes first appeared on the shelves of tobacco stores in 1913. It was then namely RJR – the American company, specializing in the production of tobacco and accessories for smoking pipes, decided to change its direction of activity and began to manufacture cigarettes that only gained popularity among smokers of that time.
The company quickly gained popularity among smokers, which contributed to successful advertising campaigns and excellent quality of raw materials. Unlike competitors, RJR used an original smoking mixture, which consisted of tart dark Turkish tobacco and light varieties Virginia and Burley. Due to successful proportions, Camel cigarettes were significantly different from the competitors’ products: despite the mild taste and restrained aroma, the tobacco mixture was full of piquant notes of oriental spices.
Camel makers have always paid special attention to quality control in production. The density of paper, the burning time of cigarettes, the efficiency of the coal filter and, of course, the quality of the tobacco mixture has always been at the height, which led the brand into the top five in terms of sales. In the second half of the 20th century, the company’s only competitor was the equally famous Marlboro brand, with whom she shared the laurels of the primacy in the tobacco industry. Constant symbol of Camel has always been Camel Joe – a cartoon character who in various roles invariably adorns packs of cigarettes of the manufacturer. Even today, Camel cigarettes are easy to recognize by a well-remembered composition of pyramids and a two-humped animal.
In 2008, Camel cigarettes experienced a major rebranding. The pack acquired more refined, elegant and modern forms. Changes affected not only the appearance and range, but also the smoking mixture. The manufacturer has revised the proportions of heavy Turkish tobacco Oriental in favor of the softer and light varieties of Virginia and Burley. It should be noted that the innovations significantly reduced the amount of harmful impurities and resins, but managed to preserve the unique taste and original flavor of the classic “Camel”.
